Fact
Roadways and bridges are the cornerstone of our nation’s infrastructure enabling trade, powering businesses, spurring economic growth, and getting people connected. Australia has a total road network of 877,651 km, with an average growth rate of 1,360 km of new roads per annum (Commonwealth of Australia, 2018).
Construction of new roads requires significant quantities of construction materials, which has traditionally been obtained from quarries. The opening of new quarries and expansion of existing quarries, however, lead to significant environmental impacts due to the use of quarried materials and excessive use of cement and lime. For producing each tone of cement, 990 kg of carbon dioxide is emitted.
20 million tonnes of Construction and Demolition (C&D) wastes are generated each year in Australia and 8 million tonnes, or 40% of this waste stream, are currently landfilled.
Up to 4 million tonnes of C&D wastes landfilled annually in Australia are contaminated and unsuitable for reuse applications. C&D materials include crushed concrete, brick, reclaimed asphalt, glass and waste rock, typically separated at the C&D sites into individual stockpiles. These wastes can be re-used with the addition of binders for new roads.
Sustainable Solution
There is an urgent need to divert wastes from landfills and to utilise them instead as valuable resource material. The demand for extractive resources Australia-wide is at an all-time high due to rapid population growth and an increase in the major infrastructure projects. In Victoria alone, there are currently 535 quarries which produce 50 million tonnes of virgin sand and aggregates each year for the construction industry. C&D operators and road contractors are continually seeking new markets in civil infrastructure projects.
Our Approach
Civil Deck has done extensive research on the use of C&D materials in the design of road bases and subbases and aims to extend the use of such waste in the design of new roads. We are also experts in advanced material testing methods for road construction and geotechnical investigation.
